What to Expect From Psychological Treatment

There is a lot of misinformation about psychological treatment. Here’s what to expect from treatment at the Toronto OCD and Anxiety Treatment Center:

  • Treatment at the Toronto OCD and Anxiety Treatment Center is caring, welcoming, and inclusive, and treatment is flexible to fit your personal needs.

Research has demonstrated the efficacy of CBT with many different problems, and with people from different cultures and backgrounds. If you’re ever feeling uncomfortable in treatment, it’s important to bring this up with your psychologist.

  • A Treatment session is typically 50 minutes long, and is scheduled once or twice per week.

There are exceptions to this. I will discuss my recommendations with you, and work collaboratively with you to make a treatment plan that will be helpful, and fits with your schedule and budget. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all treatment is currently being provided remotely via phone or secure videoconference.

  • Treatment is time-limited.

The length of time in treatment can vary, and I will discuss your specific treatment recommendations with you, but typically you should expect to see benefit within 8-20 sessions, or sooner.

  • Therapy is focused on the present day.

The focus in treatment is making actionable and helpful changes in your day-to-day life.

  • Therapy is transparent.

I will discuss treatment recommendations and prognosis with you, so you are aware of what to expect from therapy. You should always have an understandable rationale for recommendations. I encourage you to ask questions to help you understand your treatment.

  • Therapy provides useful skills and techniques that will help you feel better. Practicing these skills is important.

Treatment will be more helpful the more you can incorporate learning from sessions into your daily routines, and helping you do this is a part of treatment. What you’ve gained from therapy should continue to help you beyond the end of treatment.
